Numerical model for a failure process of an ice sheet

نویسندگان

چکیده

Model for describing a three-dimensional continuous failure process of an ice sheet is introduced. The presented model based on the combined finite-discrete element method. consists polyhedral rigid discrete elements joined by lattice Timoshenko beam elements, which go through cohesive softening upon failure. contact accounts inter-particle friction and local in contacts. carefully validated against laboratory experiment, where pushed inclined plane. Convincing agreement between modelled experimental found. effect tessellation size tested found to be only moderate. compares favorably earlier ones: modelling results agree, domain sizes used can large, processes are long duration. Requirements numerical discussed.

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...

Microstructure through an ice sheet

Ice cores through an ice sheet can be regarded as a sample of a unique natural deformation experiment lasting up to a million years. Compared to other geological materials forming the earth‘s crust, the microstructure is directly accessible over the full depth. Controlled sublimation etching of polished ice sections reveals pores, air bubbles, grain boundaries and subgrain boundaries at the sur...

A quasi-analytical ice-sheet model for climate studies

A simple quasi-analytical model is developed to study the response of ice-sheets to climate change. The model is axi-symmetrical and rests on a bed with a constant slope. The mechanics are highly parameterised. The climatic conditions are represented by the altitude of the runoff line. Above the runoff line the accumulation rate is constant (but may depend on, for instance, the ice-sheet size),...

Tracer transport in an isochronal ice-sheet model

The full history of ice sheet and climate interactions is recorded in the vertical profiles of geochemical tracers in polar ice sheets. Numerical simulations of these archives promise great advances both in the interpretation of these reconstructions and the validation of the models themselves. However, fundamental mathematical shortcomings of existing models subject tracers to spurious diffusi...
